Room 506, Monday afternoon

Ringo hadn't been to a club before. Prior to Fandom, she'd never really had the opportunity. She wasn't even sure if she was super-excited about it now that she did have the opportunity, but she did have to admit that she was curious.

And a bit competitive.

Which meant that her first time at a club had to be impressive. But it was hard to be impressive when you weren't entirely sure what constituted "impressive" at the intended venue. Which was why Ringo wasn't making a ton of progress in picking from the various dresses that she'd laid out on her bed. They were all new-ish, items she'd picked up on her trip into Baltimore with Kathy.

At least she'd decided that she was definitely wearing heels, and she only had the one pair of those, so that part of her wardrobe was figured out?

Now she just had to do the rest.

Good thing she had plenty of time.

Usually proving to someone that she was awesome. In this case, it was impressing Dante because he kept acting like she wasn't impressive. That'd show him!

Ringo pouted slightly, then sighed. "Like I said, you know more about this kind of thing than I do. I think I kind of have to trust you." Besides, Kathy was her friend. So that probably meant she wouldn't intentionally steer Ringo toward disaster.

Right?

Dante wasn't impressed by anything that wasn't a pizza and a fifth of whiskey, come on now, Ringo.

"All right, but fair warning: club impressive usually means short, tight, uncomfortable, or some combination of all three. You won't be able to move around normally once we get you into whatever you're wearing, okay?"

She started looking at the clothes Ringo had laid out on her bed. "Let's see what we have to work with.."

Ringo could do it! You'd see, Kathy!

She made a slight face. "Uncomfortable I can do for one night," she allowed, only a bit reluctantly. Or the other, two, even. Short and tight weren't really problems, even if she wasn't terribly used to either of them.

"I hope I've got something that'll work, at least," she added, standing next to Kathy and studying what she'd pulled from her closet. It was primarily stuff that they'd bought together in Baltimore, with a few items Ringo had picked up on a solo trip back, and one or two things she'd brought from home that sort of felt like they might work.

Yeah, if Ringo managed to impress Dante, Kathy would want video evidence. And then she would be first in line to shake Ringo's hand.

"Oh, yeah, we can definitely find something in all of this," Kathy said. "Too bad Letty's not on-island, huh?" She picked up a dress, held it against Ringo's chest, pursed her lips, and then set it aside. "So do you know how to dance? Club-dance, I mean."

It could happen!

"She probably would be pretty helpful," Ringo agreed with a grin, reaching out to take the dress and hold it in place for a moment.

"I know how to dance!" Wait. "Is it different at a club?" No one had told her that!

"Can you bump and grind?" Kathy asked, raising an eyebrow. "Can you drop it low then pick it back up again?"

"Oh, I'm really good at grinds." No, Ringo, not the AirTrek kind. "But what am I dropping and picking back up?"

Nope, sorry Ringo. Kathy was going to break her promise and laugh now. It was just what had to happen.

"Oh dear," she said, giggling. "'It' in this case happens to be your butt. It's also what you grind with." Hang on, Ring, she needed to pull up a video to show you an example.

"You promised not to laugh," Ringo huffed. But then she leaned over Kathy's phone to watch.

"Huh," she said, after it was over. "I guess I've never done anything like that before." She looked thoughtful. "But it doesn't look too hard." A curious look over at Kathy. "I take it that this is pretty important?"

"It is if you want to dance," Kathy said a firmly. "Especially if you want to surprise the heck out of Dante." Kathy demonstrated, moving along to the beat. As Ringo surmised, it was much easier if you had excellent balance and flexibility. "He won't expect you to know how to do it."

Well that made Ringo grin. Because that was excellent motivation.

"So, like this?" Ringo asked, a look of intense concentration on her face as she tried to mimic Kathy's movements. She had the grace, and the sense of rhythm, but she didn't know which movements to emphasize and which ones to minimize. She was definitely going to need to work on this.

She could practice while Kathy went through her clothes!

"Good!" Kathy said, nodding much the same way her old coach had done when Kathy had been learning a new move. "But you need to accentuate your hips more. And use your knees. Here, I'll show you." She stood in front of Ringo, reached forward for her hands to place them on her Kathys's own hips, and grooved a bit to show her what she meant.

Ringo shifted her hands ever so slightly, trying to follow the way that Kathy's muscles shifted as she moved.

And then she realized what she was doing.

Well, someone's breathing was coming a little faster now. She didn't think Kathy could hear her heart pounding.

"What happened, Ringo? You had it for a sec!" Kathy encouraged. "C'mon, I know you can get it."

Go on. Get it, girl.

Ringo shook herself, closing her eyes for a moment so that she could concentrate on not being hyper-aware of how close they were. Then took a deep breath, and tried again.

Fortunately, Ringo had a lot of practice at being focused on the way her body moved, and having her hands on Kathy's hips really did give her a feel for what she was supposed to be doing.

So she tried again, shifting some of the movement from her hips down into her knees while trying to emphasize the way her hips were still moving.

And not looking at Kathy.

"Good! Good!" Kathy said. "Just let the beat move you, you know? In the club, it'll be loud enough to feel it through your feet, just groove along with it and you'll be good. For your hands, you can either rest them on your thighs, or bring them up to shoulder-height and move them a little to the beat, too."

Once again, guys had it easier. They basically just had to two-step in an approximation of the beat and that was fine.

"Like this?" Ringo asked, holding her hands up and settling them into the rhythm of the rest of her body.

"That's right girl! Work it!" Okay, that didn't sound quite right coming from Kathy. She didn't quite have the cadence right. "So, if you're feeling comfortable with that, we can move on to dropping it low?"

"I think we could try that?" Ringo allowed. "I don't know if I've got this down, but it's kind of close right?"

Eventually she was going to get around to asking why this was the appropriate style of dancing for a club.

Because it went with the music, which was primarily about sex, of course!

"It's lookin' good," Kathy approved. "You can keep practicing while I figure out some potential outfits. That's your basic dance, uh, step?" Not that it was really a step as such. "But another important move is this."

And then she grooved down low, bottom out, before dancing back up straight. "The trick is to go as low as possible without falling over." Which for them wasn't really an issue.

"Oh, I can probably do that." Ringo started lowering herself, still trying to keep her sense of rhythm. "Are you supposed to actually sit down if you can?" she asked curiously.

"Nope! Only things that should hit the floor is your feet," Kathy explained. "Anything else does and you've lost."

She figured that would be the easiest way for Ringo to get it: make it a competition.

Oh, Kathy totally knew how to get in Ringo's head. She nodded in determination. "So as close to the floor as possible without touching it." Yeah, she could do that.

She kept practicing while glancing over at Kathy. "So I've got something that'll work, right?"

Hey, Kathy knew what Ringo liked! With one glaring exception.

"Yup! I've narrowed it down to three," Kathy said, scooping up several of the other dresses to hang back up in Ringo's closet. "They're the ones closest to you. Pick the one you like--you need more shoes."

One pair of heels, Ringo? You know you needed more than ATs, right?

"More shoes?" Ringo asked. "But I have a pair of heels to wear." She only even had the one pair because Letty had insisted, so Kathy was lucky that there was even that much to work with!

She looked over the three outfits thoughtfully. "Are these the three shortest things I own?" she asked, not upset or shocked, merely curious.
